Are there any mobile apps or devices to track male fertility health?

Your phone doesn't have a sensor that can see sperm. The useful technology in this category sits in two places: at-home devices that count sperm concentration, and apps that log the behaviors that affect the result. If you want a number you can act on, a home sperm test beats any fertility app on the market.

The short version

Fertility apps for men exist, but they only log what you tell them. No app on either app store measures anything about sperm quality. The measurement devices are physical: small at-home kits that use a microscope attachment or a centrifuge cartridge to count sperm concentration. Temperature tracking is a separate piece, built on solid physiology, but the dedicated wearable market for it remains small.

What an at-home sperm test measures

Two at-home sperm test systems hold FDA clearance for measuring sperm concentration at home: the YO Home Sperm Test and the Trak Male Fertility Testing System. A third, ExSeed, carries CE marking in Europe. YO uses a smartphone microscope attachment and shows you a video of your sperm. Trak spins a sample in a cartridge to isolate sperm and reports a concentration number in millions per milliliter.

What these devices give you is a count. Not the full picture. A standard lab semen analysis measures volume, concentration, total count, progressive motility, morphology (the shape of the sperm), and pH, with DNA fragmentation testing available as an add-on. A home kit covers the concentration piece, sometimes with a motility readout, and leaves the rest to the lab.

That matters if your number comes back borderline. A result of 14 million per milliliter is below the World Health Organization's 2021 lower reference bound of 16 million per milliliter. But a lab is the only way to learn whether the motile fraction and morphology are also off. The home device is a screening tool, not a diagnosis.

The app gap

Fertility tracking apps built for couples are built around the female menstrual cycle. Ovulation prediction, luteal phase timing, basal body temperature, that structure. Men get a login, not a feature set. The male side of those apps typically amounts to a checkbox for whether you entered data or a log of intercourse timing.

A log becomes useful when you've kept it long enough. Sperm production runs on a cycle of roughly 64 to 74 days. A bad result in March reflects conditions in December and January. If you log heat exposure, illness, alcohol, sleep, exercise, and recovery time across a three-month window, you and your doctor get a timeline to correlate against any changes in your numbers. That's the function of an app in this category: memory, not measurement.

The temperature angle

Temperature tracking matters because the testicles tune their environment carefully. Sperm production depends on scrotal temperature running a few degrees below core temperature. The research supports this directly. Tight underwear and long periods sitting raise scrotal temperature (Jung et al., Human Reproduction, 2005). A laptop balanced on the thighs adds measurable heat (Sheynkin et al., Human Reproduction, 2005). Men who reported wearing looser, boxer-style underwear had higher average sperm concentration than men in tighter briefs in a fertility-center cohort (Minguez-Alarcon et al., Human Reproduction, 2018).

Dedicated wearable temperature loggers exist but remain niche. Most are research tools or early-stage consumer devices without a long independent track record. If you want to track temperature, a simple habits log works nearly as well: hot baths, sauna sessions, laptop on lap, tight underwear, long seated hours. Note them. The effect on sperm parameters from sustained heat is well documented and reverses once the heat stops (Garolla et al., Human Reproduction, 2013).

What a lab gives you that home tech doesn't

At a clinic, a technician runs the full WHO panel. You get the numbers your home device was calibrated against, plus morphology, which home kits don't measure reliably. You also get a technician looking at a fresh sample, which removes the main source of home-test variability: time. Sperm motility declines within an hour of ejaculation, so a sample collected and processed within a controlled timeframe gives a more consistent read.

If your home result comes back below the WHO reference bound, a lab visit is the next step, not a retest at home. The home number tells you whether it's worth booking the appointment.

A practical sequence

Some men start with a home test to get a baseline number before deciding whether to schedule a clinic visit. The sequence that fits the evidence:

  1. Take a home sperm concentration test after two to three days of abstinence, the window most manufacturers recommend for a consistent sample.
  2. Log the behaviors that matter over the prior three months: heat exposure, illness, alcohol, sleep, exercise.
  3. If the number lands below the WHO reference bound or near it, book a semen analysis with a urologist or reproductive specialist.
  4. Bring the log with you. The timeline gives the doctor something to work with.

The technology gap is real but shrinking. A decade ago your only option was a clinic. Now you can get a sperm concentration number in your kitchen, and the main thing standing between you and useful data is consistent logging before and after the test.
