That statistic has men asking better questions about their own fertility, and a fast-growing category of tools is trying to answer them. The short answer is yes, there are a handful of legitimate mobile apps and devices built for male fertility tracking. Most combine an at-home measurement step with a companion app. A few are simple lifestyle loggers. None replaces a lab, but some can help you spot patterns before you walk into a doctor's office.
At-home semen analysis kits with their own apps

A normal-looking result does not guarantee fertility, but an abnormal one is a prompt to see a urologist. That is the right frame: screening, not a verdict.
Lifestyle logging apps that support male fertility
A number of apps are built around logging factors that research ties to sperm quality. The feature set is similar: you record sleep, alcohol, tobacco, exercise, sexual activity, stress, supplement intake, and often heat exposure (sauna, hot baths, tight clothing, laptop use). The app then lets you overlay those logs with periodic semen analysis results to see if any pattern emerges.
None of these lifestyle loggers are regulated medical devices, so treat them as a notebook with a good search function, not a clinical tool. The science behind the things they prompt you to track is strong.
- Heat exposure temporarily lowers sperm count and can worsen morphology. Sperm production needs the testicles a few degrees cooler than core body temperature. Sauna-level heat disrupts that (Garolla et al., Human Reproduction, 2013). The effect reverses once the heat stops. Logging heat events helps you later see if a dip in numbers coincides with periods of frequent sauna or cycling.
- Underwear choice and sitting time affect scrotal temperature. Men who wore boxers had higher sperm concentration and total count than men who wore tighter briefs (Minguez-Alarcon et al., Human Reproduction, 2018). Extended sitting with a laptop on the lap raises testicular temperature. Tracking what you wear and how much you sit is straightforward in most apps.
- Sleep has been linked to better sperm parameters in multiple prospective studies. Logging hours and quality is simple, especially if you already use a sleep tracker.
- Stress was independently associated with lower sperm concentration, motility, and morphology in a study of 744 men (Janevic et al., Fertility and Sterility, 2014). An app that prompts a daily stress rating can reveal a long-term trend you might miss week to week.
- Diet patterns matter. Heavily processed foods, trans fat, and sugary drinks associate with poorer sperm parameters, while diets rich in fish, vegetables, and nuts associate with better ones. If you already log meals, focus on those categories.
- Exercise shows a J-shaped relationship. Moderate activity is linked to better sperm quality; prolonged, exhaustive endurance training can suppress it. Logging workout type and duration adds context to any semen analysis result.
General health apps and wearables you already own
Many men already wear a fitness tracker or ring. The data those devices collect maps directly onto the fertility risk factors above.
Sleep duration, stages, and consistency are available from any recent Apple Watch, Fitbit, Whoop band, or Oura Ring. In the fertility context, you are looking for averages over weeks, not a single night. Heart rate variability (HRV) serves as a rough proxy for physiological stress load. When HRV trends down for days, it often reflects poor recovery, poor sleep, or high mental strain, all of which appear in the sperm-quality literature. Skin temperature from a wearable can flag higher overnight warmth, which sometimes points to inflammation, alcohol, or overtraining. It is not a direct scrotal temperature reading, but it adds context.
Apple Health and Google Fit pull all of this into a single timeline. You can manually add a note each day with a simple heat-exposure log ("sauna 15 min," "hot bath," "track day in compression shorts") and let the phone line up the data.
What these tools cannot do
No app predicts fertility. No app replaces a semen analysis. Home kits measure concentration and motility; they do not examine morphology at the same resolution as a lab, and none run a DNA fragmentation assay. If a couple has been trying to conceive for a year without success (or six months if the female partner is over 35), the most productive step is a formal workup with a urologist or reproductive endocrinologist.
Home tracking also cannot assign cause and effect. If your sperm concentration drops in January and you also started a new job, drank more, and stopped exercising, the app cannot tell you which factor drove the change. It can only show the overlap. The play is to use the data to have a better conversation with a doctor, not to self-treat.
A practical workflow
You do not need a stack of gadgets. A defensible minimum looks like this:
- Get a baseline semen analysis through your doctor or a reputable mail-in service. Note the numbers.
- Pick one app (Trak, YO, Legacy, or even a plain note-taking app) and log sleep, alcohol, stress, heat exposure, and exercise. Use a wearable for sleep and HRV if you already have one.
- Re-test in about three months. A full spermatogenesis cycle runs roughly 72 days, so that window is long enough to see if lifestyle changes are reflected.
- Look for pattern overlap. If you made one change (cut heat exposure and swapped to looser underwear) and your numbers moved, that is a signal to bring to your doctor.
You are not hunting for a perfect score. You are looking for a consistent pattern that gives you and your doctor something actionable to discuss.
