You'd think "natural" means safe. When it comes to fertility, that assumption can cost you.
Walk into any supplement aisle and you'll find bottles marketed for testosterone, libido, and "male vitality." Most of them are harmless. Some are helpful. A few-including ingredients you'd assume are good for you-can actively damage sperm quality.
Here's what the research actually shows.
The supplements that can backfire
Ashwagandha (in specific contexts)
Ashwagandha gets a lot of attention for reducing cortisol and supporting testosterone. A 2019 study in Reproductive Biomedicine Online found that 90 days of ashwagandha supplementation improved sperm count and motility in men with low sperm counts.
But here's the catch: ashwagandha belongs to a class of herbs that can influence thyroid function. In men with subclinical hyperthyroidism or autoimmune thyroid conditions, ashwagandha may push thyroid hormone levels too high. St. John's Wort
This is one of the most well-documented fertility disruptors in the supplement world.
St. John's Wort induces liver enzymes that break down hormones, including testosterone. A 2016 review in Phytotherapy Research noted that St. John's Wort can reduce testosterone levels and impair sperm production in animal models. Human studies are limited, but the mechanism is clear: by accelerating hormone metabolism, it can throw off the delicate balance required for healthy spermatogenesis.

Soy isoflavones (in high doses)
Soy gets a bad reputation it mostly doesn't deserve. Moderate consumption of whole soy foods like tofu or edamame has not been shown to harm male fertility in most studies.
But concentrated soy isoflavone supplements are a different story. A 2021 meta-analysis in Nutrients found that high-dose isoflavone supplementation (100mg or more per day) was associated with reduced sperm concentration in some studies. The effect appears to be dose-dependent and more pronounced in men who already have borderline fertility.
Whole soy foods? Fine. Soy isoflavone capsules? Proceed with caution.
Zinc (too much of it)
Zinc is essential for sperm production. Men with zinc deficiency often have low sperm counts. But more is not better.
A 2018 study in Biological Trace Element Research found that zinc supplementation above 40mg per day can interfere with copper absorption, and copper is necessary for sperm membrane integrity. Some research suggests that supraphysiological zinc levels may actually impair sperm motility.

Vitamin A (retinol form)
Fat-soluble vitamins accumulate in the body. Vitamin A is critical for reproductive health, but excessive intake-particularly from retinol-based supplements rather than beta-carotene-can be toxic to sperm.
A 2014 study in Reproductive Toxicology reported that high-dose vitamin A supplementation disrupted spermatogenesis in animal models. Human case reports have linked extreme vitamin A intake (above 10,000 IU daily) with reduced semen quality.
Beta-carotene from food sources like carrots and sweet potatoes does not carry this risk because the body converts only what it needs.
DHEA
Dehydroepiandrosterone is sold as a "natural testosterone booster." The logic seems sound: DHEA is a precursor hormone that the body converts into testosterone.
The problem is that DHEA doesn't always convert the way you'd hope. It can also convert into estrogen. A 2013 study in Fertility and Sterility found that DHEA supplementation in men increased estrogen levels without reliably increasing testosterone. Higher estrogen relative to testosterone is associated with reduced sperm production.
Some men do benefit from DHEA under medical supervision with blood monitoring. Self-prescribing it for fertility is a gamble.
Why "natural" doesn't mean "safe for fertility"
The supplement industry operates differently than pharmaceuticals. In the United States, the FDA does not evaluate supplements for safety or efficacy before they hit shelves. A "natural" label tells you nothing about:
- Whether the ingredient interacts with hormone pathways
- Whether the dose in the bottle matches what the research studied
- Whether the product contains contaminants like heavy metals or pesticides (both of which harm sperm quality)
A 2020 investigation by Consumer Reports found that several popular "male fertility" supplements contained ingredients at doses that exceeded safety thresholds established in clinical research.
The bigger picture: what actually improves sperm quality
If you're trying to optimize fertility, supplements are a secondary concern. The primary drivers of sperm health are:
Diet quality. Men who eat more vegetables, fruits, fish, and whole grains have better sperm parameters than men who eat processed diets high in sugar and saturated fat. A 2022 study in Human Reproduction Update found that adherence to a Mediterranean-style diet was associated with higher sperm count, motility, and normal morphology.
Sleep. Men who sleep less than 6 hours per night have a 29% lower sperm count than men who sleep 7 to 8 hours, according to a 2020 study in Sleep Medicine Reviews.
Temperature. Testicles need to stay about 4 degrees Celsius below core body temperature for optimal sperm production. Tight underwear, prolonged sitting, and frequent hot tub use can raise scrotal temperature enough to impair spermatogenesis for weeks.
Stress management. Chronic stress elevates cortisol, which suppresses the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. A 2017 study in Fertility and Sterility found that men with high perceived stress had lower sperm concentration and motility.
Practical takeaways
Before you start any supplement-especially one marketed for hormones or fertility-ask three questions:
- Do I actually have a deficiency? Blood work is the only reliable way to know.
- Has this supplement been studied specifically for male fertility in humans? Animal studies don't always translate.
- What's the dose, and is it within the range that research found safe?
