Your testicles sit outside your body for a reason. Sperm production works best a few degrees below core body temperature, and that temperature difference is not optional. When a form of exercise combines sitting, compression, and trapped heat, it deserves a closer look. Cycling happens to combine all three.
The question is not whether cycling is universally bad for fertility. It is when the risk shows up, how reversible it is, and what you can do to keep riding without ignoring the biology.
The temperature baseline your testicles need
Sperm production is a temperature-sensitive process. The testicles need to stay roughly 2 to 4 degrees Celsius below the rest of the body to produce sperm effectively. The scrotum, the cremaster muscle, and the network of veins around the testicles all exist to manage that temperature. When heat builds up, the scrotum relaxes and the testicles move away from the body. When it gets cold, the opposite happens.
That system can be overwhelmed. Sauna-level heat has been shown to temporarily lower sperm count and worsen sperm morphology (Garolla et al., Human Reproduction, 2013). The important word there is temporarily. Sperm production slows down when the testicles stay hot, but it recovers once the heat exposure stops. A separate study found that stopping regular wet heat exposure allowed semen parameters to recover (Shefi et al., Fertility and Sterility, 2007).
So the baseline for any exercise question is simple: does it raise testicular temperature enough, for long enough, to matter?
What cycling does that other exercise does not
Most exercise is not a fertility problem. Running, lifting, swimming, and team sports all move the body, increase airflow, and let sweat evaporate. Cycling is different because of the saddle.
A cyclist spends long stretches in a seated position on a narrow surface. That creates three overlapping conditions:
Sitting raises scrotal temperature on its own. Sitting still with the thighs together and the testicles held close to the body reduces the air circulation that would normally carry heat away. Jung et al. (2005) found that scrotal temperature rose when men sat compared to when they moved, and tight underwear made it worse. Mieusset et al. (2007) reported similar findings on the effect of clothing and posture.
Mechanical pressure compresses the perineum. The perineum is the area between the scrotum and the anus. On a bike saddle, your body weight presses directly into that area for the entire ride. That pressure can reduce blood flow and compress nerves. Riders who have done long sessions know the temporary numbness that can follow. That numbness is a signal the tissue is being compressed, not a sign everything is fine.
Exercise heat gets trapped in synthetic shorts. Cycling shorts are often tight and made from synthetic materials that do not breathe as well as looser natural fibers. The body produces significant heat during a hard ride, and that heat has nowhere to go when the shorts are tight and the saddle is warm.
Combine sitting, pressure, and trapped heat, and you have a situation where testicular temperature can rise well above the range sperm production prefers. Sheynkin et al. (2005) showed that even a laptop sitting on the lap raised scrotal temperature by about 2.7 degrees Celsius in under an hour. A bike saddle under a hard rider for two hours is a far larger thermal load.
The research on cyclists specifically
The research on cyclists and semen quality is thinner than the mechanistic research on heat and testicular temperature. Small observational studies have reported lower sperm concentration and motility in men who ride high weekly mileage, but the findings are not consistent across all studies. Some studies find no meaningful difference between cyclists and other active men.
What is clearer is that the changes, when they do appear, tend to be reversible. That matches the broader heat research: if the heat source is removed, sperm production gradually returns to its previous level.
The same applies to the numbness and erectile concerns that get lumped into the cycling conversation. Perineal compression can cause temporary numbness in the penis or scrotum after a long ride. For most men, the sensation returns once they stand up and blood flow resumes. But riders who ignore persistent numbness and continue riding on a poorly fitted saddle can develop longer-lasting nerve irritation. That is a different issue from fertility, but it sits in the same anatomical neighborhood.
When it is worth paying attention
Cycling does not harm fertility in every man who rides. The risk scales with volume, heat, saddle fit, and clothing.
The men most likely to see measurable changes are those who ride for many hours per week, often in hot conditions, in tight shorts, without breaks. A 20-minute commute on a bike is not the same as a 6-hour training ride in the middle of summer. The dose matters.
Signs worth noticing include:
- Numbness in the perineum, scrotum, or penis during or after rides
- A persistent feeling of heat or chafing in the groin after riding
- Pain or pressure that does not go away within a short time after standing
- Any change in semen appearance or volume that concerns you
None of these means you have damaged your fertility. They mean the current setup is creating enough heat and pressure to pay attention to.
If you are actively trying to conceive, the conversation is slightly different. Reducing high-volume riding for a few months is a reasonable topic to raise with a doctor. The research suggests the effect is reversible, so this is not a permanent loss. It is a temporary adjustment while you and your partner are trying.
Other exercises that deserve a mention
Cycling gets the most attention because of the saddle, but it is not the only activity where heat can build up.
Horseback riding produces a similar seated position with perineal pressure and less airflow. Motorcycle riding in hot weather does the same. Spinning classes can be worse than outdoor cycling in one way: the room is often hot and humid, and there is no wind to evaporate sweat. Rowing machines involve sitting on a small seat, though the position is different and the perineal pressure is usually less direct.
Strength training, running, and most team sports do not create the same sustained heat or pressure. They may produce a brief rise in scrotal temperature during intense effort, but the body can manage that because the movement itself creates airflow and the heat source is the body's own metabolism, not a compressed saddle.
The pattern is consistent. The exercise itself is rarely the problem. The problem is when the exercise holds the testicles hot and compressed for a long time.
Practical changes if you ride
The goal is not to stop riding. The goal is to remove the conditions that make riding a potential problem.
- Get a proper saddle fit. A saddle with a cutout or a pressure-relief channel can reduce perineal pressure. Seat height and angle matter too. If the nose of the saddle is tilted up, it digs into the perineum. If the seat is too high, you rock side to side and generate more friction and pressure.
- Stand up periodically. Standing out of the saddle every 15 or 20 minutes restores blood flow and lets heat dissipate. Even a few seconds out of the saddle helps.
- Wear breathable clothing, and change out of it when you stop. Tight synthetic shorts trap heat. During a ride, some compression is useful for support, but after the ride, sitting in damp, hot shorts keeps the area warm. Shower and change into dry, breathable underwear after a hard session.
- Consider your day-to-day underwear. Men reporting looser, boxer-style underwear had higher sperm concentration and total count in a fertility-center cohort (Minguez-Alarcon et al., Human Reproduction, 2018). That study looked at everyday wear, not cycling shorts, but the principle carries over. When you are not riding, give the area room for air.
- Do not put a laptop on your lap. The laptop study from Sheynkin et al. is a reminder that heat sources near the groin add up. That habit is common enough to mention alongside cycling.
- If you are trying to conceive, talk to your doctor. A semen analysis before and after a period of reduced riding volume can give you real data instead of guesswork. Research suggests the effect is reversible, so a few months of lower volume or different training can be enough.
What this means for your training
Cycling is not a fertility death sentence. The evidence points to a dose-dependent, reversible effect for men who ride long hours in hot conditions with poor saddle fit and tight clothing. The same evidence points to very little concern for men who ride moderately and pay attention to heat and pressure.
The actionable insight is not to avoid the bike. It is to treat testicular temperature the way you treat hydration or recovery: as something to monitor and manage during training.
If you feel numbness, get a saddle fit. If you ride in heat, take breaks and change out of wet shorts. If you are trying to conceive, reduce high-volume riding for a few months and get a semen analysis.
The body has a remarkable capacity to recover once the heat source is removed. The men who have problems are usually the men who ignore the warning signs for years, not the men who make a few practical adjustments.
