Yes, some types of exercise and physical activity can temporarily affect sperm quality or hormone levels. But the picture is more nuanced than the internet makes it sound. The main pathways by which training might influence fertility boil down to three things: heat, physical pressure, and hormonal stress. In most cases, the effects are reversible, and a lot of the permanent damage stories are overblown. Still, if you’re actively trying to conceive, it’s worth understanding what’s happening under the hood so you can adjust your training instead of abandoning it.

Activity That Raises Testicular Temperature
The testes sit outside the body for a reason. Sperm production runs best at a temperature about 2 to 4°C cooler than your core body temperature. That’s why your scrotum contracts and relaxes to regulate heat. Any activity that pushes scrotal temperature higher for extended periods can temporarily slow down sperm production. This isn’t permanent. The testicles recover once they cool down. But during the window of heat exposure, sperm count, motility, and morphology can take a hit.
Hot environments and clothing. Exercising in a hot room, wearing thick compression shorts, or sitting in a sauna after a workout can all trap heat around the groin. A study in Human Reproduction (Thonneau et al., 1998) found that men who regularly used hot baths or saunas had reduced sperm parameters. Those parameters returned to normal within a few months of stopping. More recent work on Finnish sauna users shows that while a single sauna session raises scrotal temperature, sperm quality in regular users does not appear permanently damaged. That suggests the body can adapt, or that the exposure isn’t enough to cause lasting harm. The key factors are duration and frequency.
Endurance in the heat. Long-distance running or cycling in hot weather, especially in non-breathable gear, can raise scrotal temperature enough to affect sperm. A small study of long-distance runners (Brown-Woodman et al., 1984) found a temporary drop in sperm count after a marathon in warm conditions. Again, this reversed within days.
If you’re concerned about fertility, you don’t need to quit the sauna or stop running. Simple adjustments help:
- Choose loose, moisture-wicking shorts.
- Take cool-down breaks.
- Avoid sitting in sweat-soaked gear after training.
- If you use a sauna, keep sessions moderate (10 to 15 minutes) and allow a cool-down period afterward.
The body’s natural cooling mechanisms are robust as long as you give them a chance to work.
Pressure and Trauma: The Cycling Question
Cycling gets singled out in fertility conversations, and the concern is real, but it’s often misunderstood. The issue isn’t just sitting on a saddle. It’s the combination of pressure on the perineum (the area behind the scrotum), reduced blood flow, and heat buildup over hours. That pressure can temporarily affect nerve function and blood supply to the testes, which may influence sperm production and hormone levels.
A study in Fertility and Sterility (Gebreegziabher et al., 2011) looked at more than 200 cyclists and found that those riding five or more hours per week had lower sperm concentration and total motile sperm count compared to less frequent riders. Another study (Shenfeld et al., 1996) measured scrotal temperature in cyclists and found it rose significantly during a 40-minute ride, especially when wearing padded shorts and using a narrow saddle.
These effects do not seem to be permanent in most men. When researchers tracked sperm quality after a period of rest, counts generally bounced back. The main risk is for men who are doing high-volume cycling, year after year, without taking breaks or adjusting their setup.
Other activities with impact risk. Contact sports like soccer, hockey, or martial arts carry an obvious danger of direct trauma to the testicles. A single hard blow can cause swelling, bruising, or even testicular rupture, which can permanently affect fertility if not treated quickly. Wearing a protective cup removes most of that risk. Recreational weightlifting doesn’t typically pose a trauma threat unless a plate drops on your lap. Yet certain movements like heavy deadlifts or kettlebell swings that pass close to the groin do carry a small chance of hitting your own anatomy. Staying aware of bar path and using controlled form prevents that.
What you can do. If you cycle extensively, invest in a saddle with a cutout or pressure-relief channel, wear padded but not overly thick shorts, and stand up out of the saddle periodically to restore blood flow. For contact sports, use a properly fitted cup. These steps aren’t just fertility protection. They also prevent numbness and long-term nerve issues.
When Exercise Becomes a Hormonal Stressor
Exercise is a physical stressor, and your body’s hormonal system responds accordingly. Moderation supports testosterone and overall reproductive health. Extreme training volumes combined with inadequate recovery can push the system in the opposite direction.
Overtraining and low energy availability
Endurance athletes, particularly long-distance runners and cyclists who train 15 or more hours per week, sometimes show a condition called “exercise-hypogonadal male condition.” In plain terms, their testosterone and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels drop below normal, and sperm production can suffer. A 2012 review by Hackney et al. in Sports Medicine described how chronic high-volume endurance training, especially when paired with insufficient calorie intake, can suppress the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. This hormonal suppression is the body’s way of saying “now is not the time for reproduction” when it’s under constant physical strain.
The same pattern can show up in men who cut weight aggressively. Think bodybuilders or combat athletes in prolonged calorie deficits. When body fat dips too low or energy availability is sparse, testosterone levels decline, libido drops, and sperm quality may deteriorate. A study of male bodybuilders pre-contest (Maestu et al., 2005) found significant reductions in serum testosterone during extreme dieting phases. Values returned to normal after competition when they resumed a maintenance diet.
The other end of the spectrum
This isn’t about exercise harming fertility but the reverse. Sedentary men with high body fat tend to have lower testosterone and poorer sperm quality due to increased aromatase activity (which converts testosterone to estrogen) and elevated scrotal temperature from excess fat tissue. Exercise, particularly resistance training and high-intensity interval work, can improve hormonal profiles. That’s a topic for another post.
Finding the sweet spot
For most men, a routine of 3 to 5 weekly sessions mixing strength training and aerobic work supports fertility. The problems start when training volume goes past what you can recover from, or when you’re chronically under-fueled. Signs to watch: persistent fatigue, loss of morning erections, reduced libido, and trouble sleeping. If those show up, dialing back volume by 30 to 50% for a week while increasing calorie intake often resolves the issue.
How to Train Without Compromising Fertility
None of this means you need to baby-proof your gym bag. The research points to a handful of controllable factors that let you keep training hard while supporting reproductive health.
- Control heat exposure. Avoid prolonged sitting in hot, synthetic gear. Shower and change out of sweat-soaked clothes soon after exercise. If you use a sauna or hot tub, keep sessions brief and track your body’s response. Some men with already low sperm counts may want to limit sauna use altogether during conception attempts. That’s a conversation for you and your doctor.
- Manage perineal pressure. For cyclists, a properly fitted saddle and regular standing breaks are non-negotiable. For weightlifters, pay attention to form on exercises that bring a load near the groin. If you play contact sports, wear a cup. Testicular trauma is entirely preventable.
- Don’t under-eat. Adequate calorie and fat intake is crucial for hormone production. If you’re training hard while trying to get lean, aim for a modest calorie deficit (no more than 300 to 500 calories per day) and make sure you’re getting enough dietary fat. Think eggs, avocado, nuts, and oily fish. A chronic severe deficit is one of the fastest ways to nosedive testosterone.
- Respect recovery. Sleep is when your body does most of its tissue repair and testosterone production. Consistently getting fewer than 6 hours of sleep can lower testosterone by 10 to 15% (Leproult & Van Cauter, 2011). Include rest days. Your sperm production works on a roughly 74-day cycle, so a period of intense stress can affect sperm quality weeks later. Giving your body consistent recovery windows lets it stay on track.
- Consider what you’re wearing against your skin. This isn’t just about heat. The scrotum has exceptionally permeable skin. Human absorption studies dating back to the early 1970s (Maibach et al.) showed it absorbs compounds far more readily than the forearm or forehead. When that skin is warm and damp from exercise, absorption increases further. Synthetic fabrics often contain chemical residues (like antimony from polyester manufacturing, or formaldehyde from some cotton finishes) that can migrate into sweat. While we’re still learning how these exposures affect fertility in real-world conditions, choosing underwear made from clean, natural fibers or certified-safer synthetics during training is a low-cost move that sidesteps both heat and chemical questions. This isn’t about paranoia. It’s just physiology: less junk migrating into highly absorptive skin is a reasonable target.
Exercise is overwhelmingly positive for male fertility when done with some attention to these factors. The activities most likely to cause issues (extreme cycling volumes, chronic overtraining with calorie restriction, and repeated testicular trauma) tend to be at the high-performance end of the spectrum. For the guy who lifts four times a week, plays basketball on weekends, and hits the sauna occasionally, the risk is minimal, and the overall health benefits far outweigh the concerns.
If you’re actively trying to conceive, a quick fertility workup (semen analysis, hormone panel) will give you a baseline. Then you can experiment with small adjustments to your training and see how your body responds under a doctor’s guidance.
Treat your body well, train smart, and remember that your fertility is a reflection of your overall health. Not something you need to protect by avoiding life.
