Yes, they do. And the pattern might surprise you.

Researchers have tracked semen parameters across calendar months for decades. The consistent finding: sperm quality is not static. It fluctuates with the seasons in a way that is measurable, repeatable, and tied to biology rather than coincidence.

Here is what the data actually shows, what causes it, and what you can do with the information.

Summer is the low point. Winter is the peak.

The most consistent finding across multiple studies is that sperm concentration, total count, and motility hit their lowest in the summer months (July through September in the Northern Hemisphere) and recover to their highest in the winter (December through March).

A 2018 study published in Andrology analyzed over 6,000 semen samples from men in the United States. Sperm concentration was roughly 30 percent higher in winter compared to summer. Total motile sperm count followed the same curve. A 2013 study from Israel looking at nearly 6,500 samples found the same pattern: peak quality in January and February, trough in July and August.

The effect is not small. It is large enough that a single seasonal swing can move a man from borderline to normal range, or from normal to suboptimal, depending on the month.

Heat is the primary driver, not sunlight or vitamin D

The obvious suspect is scrotal temperature. The testicles sit outside the body for a reason. Sperm production runs best at roughly 34 to 35 degrees Celsius, about 2 to 4 degrees below core body temperature. When ambient temperature rises, the body's cooling mechanisms have to work harder to keep the testicles in that range.

Summer heat pushes scrotal temperature up. When it stays elevated for hours or days, sperm production slows. The effect is delayed. Sperm take roughly 64 to 72 days to develop and mature. So the heat of July shows up in the semen analysis of September. That lag explains why the lowest sperm counts often appear in early fall, not the middle of summer.

Winter does the opposite. Cooler ambient temperatures make it easier for the testicles to maintain the ideal temperature zone. Sperm production runs more efficiently, and the result shows up in samples collected in late winter and early spring.

Light exposure and hormone rhythms may play a supporting role

Temperature is the lead actor, but it is not the only one. Testosterone follows a seasonal rhythm of its own, with levels peaking in fall and early winter and dropping in spring and summer. Since testosterone drives sperm production, that seasonal hormone curve could reinforce the temperature-driven pattern.

Melatonin also shifts with day length. Longer nights mean more melatonin, and melatonin has been shown in animal studies to influence testicular function. The human data is thinner here, but the mechanism is plausible enough that researchers do not dismiss it.

What does not appear to drive the seasonal change is vitamin D. Despite popular speculation, studies that have measured vitamin D levels alongside semen parameters have not found a strong link between seasonal vitamin D fluctuations and sperm quality. The evidence points back to heat and hormone rhythms.

What this means for you

This is not a reason to panic about summer or assume winter is the only time conception is possible. Men conceive children year-round. The seasonal effect is real but modest in the context of an otherwise healthy man.

Where it matters is in the margins. If you are already dealing with borderline sperm parameters, summer heat can push those numbers lower. If you are planning fertility treatments or trying to conceive, timing a semen analysis or a conception attempt for late winter or early spring gives you a small but real statistical advantage.

It also matters for interpretation. If you get a semen analysis in September that comes back lower than expected, the season may be part of the explanation. A repeat test in February could look meaningfully different even if nothing else changed.

Practical steps for the warmer months

You do not need to avoid summer. You do need to be aware of what raises scrotal temperature and manage it.

  • Keep the testicles cool. Loose-fitting underwear in breathable fabrics makes a measurable difference. Tight synthetic briefs trap heat. Boxers or loose trunks in natural or moisture-wicking materials allow airflow.
  • Limit prolonged heat exposure. Hot baths, hot tubs, and extended time in saunas during summer months can compound the seasonal effect. That does not mean avoid saunas entirely. It means being smart about duration and frequency when ambient temperature is already high. A 15-minute sauna session followed by a cool-down is different from sitting in a hot tub for 45 minutes.
  • Take breaks from sedentary heat. Laptops on the lap, long car rides with heated seats, and hours of sitting with legs pressed together all raise scrotal temperature. Stand, walk, and let air circulate.

The sauna connection worth understanding

This is where the sauna conversation intersects with fertility directly. The question is not whether sauna use affects sperm. It does, temporarily. The question is whether the effect matters.

Research shows that regular sauna use (15 to 20 minutes, several times per week) causes a temporary dip in sperm count and motility. But the effect reverses once sauna use stops. A 2018 study in the Journal of Human Reproductive Sciences found that men who used a sauna for 15 minutes twice a week for three months had lower sperm counts at the end of the study, but counts returned to baseline within three months of stopping.

The mechanism is the same as summer heat: elevated scrotal temperature slows production. The difference is that sauna exposure is controlled and short-lived. The body compensates. Seasonal heat is sustained and harder to escape.

The takeaway is not that saunas are dangerous for fertility. It is that if you are actively trying to conceive and your numbers are already low, reducing heat exposure of any kind during the summer months is a reasonable step. If you are not trying to conceive, the temporary dip from sauna use is not a concern.

One caveat on the research

Most of the seasonal studies come from temperate climates with distinct summer and winter seasons. If you live in a climate that is hot year-round or consistently cool, the seasonal variation may be smaller or absent. Your body adapts to its environment. The seasonal effect is strongest where the seasonal temperature swing is largest.

Also, individual variation is wide. Some men show a strong seasonal pattern. Others show almost none. The averages tell you what happens in a population, not what will happen in your body. The only way to know your own pattern is to test across seasons.
