You hit the weights hard. You run five miles before breakfast. You're doing everything right for your heart, your muscles, your mental edge. But if you're trying to conceive-or planning to-there's a line between "optimizing health" and "overheating your reproductive system."

Exercise is good for sperm quality. Moderate, consistent movement improves count, motility, and morphology. But high-intensity training, done too often or too long without recovery, can flip that script. The research is clear: the dose matters.

Let's break down how to train smart without compromising fertility.

The mechanism: heat, cortisol, and recovery time

Sperm production runs best at about 94-96°F (34-35°C). That's a few degrees below core body temperature. The testicles hang outside the body for a reason-they're cooling units.

When you exercise hard, core temperature rises. That's normal. But if it stays elevated too long, or if you're training twice a day without letting things cool down, you're cooking your sperm.
