Every second, the male body cranks out roughly 1,500 new sperm cells. That kind of constant manufacturing demands a steady supply of raw materials. Two minerals keep showing up at the center of that process: zinc and selenium. When researchers compare men with healthy sperm parameters to men who are struggling, these nutrients are often the ones that separate the groups. So let’s look at exactly what they do and, more practically, how you can get enough of them with a fork rather than a pill.
What zinc actually does for sperm
Zinc isn’t just a nice-to-have. The prostate and seminal vesicles concentrate it so aggressively that semen ends up with 100 times more zinc than blood plasma. Sperm cells need that zinc at multiple checkpoints.
First, zinc is required to package DNA inside the sperm head. During the final stages of sperm development, most of the cell’s DNA-wrapping proteins called histones are swapped out for smaller, tighter proteins called protamines. Zinc fingers-structural motifs that depend on zinc ions-help orchestrate that swap. When zinc is low, the DNA doesn’t get packed as tightly, leaving it more vulnerable to breaks and fragmentation.
Second, the tail. Sperm motility relies on a properly formed flagellum, and zinc-dependent enzymes are involved in building the microtubule structure that lets the tail whip back and forth. A 2018 meta-analysis in the Journal of Trace Elements in Medicine and Biology pooled data from 20 studies and found that seminal plasma zinc concentrations were significantly lower in infertile men than in fertile controls. Zinc also pulls double duty as an antioxidant. Sperm cell membranes are packed with polyunsaturated fats, which makes them excellent at moving but terrible at resisting oxidative damage. The copper-zinc superoxide dismutase enzyme, which relies on zinc, is one of the body’s built-in defenses against that kind of damage. So zinc helps protect the cargo while the sperm is in transit.
One note on hormones: zinc is a cofactor in enzymes involved in testosterone synthesis, and some observational studies have noted that men with low serum zinc also tend to have lower testosterone. The relationship isn’t a clean straight line, and correcting a mild deficiency doesn’t suddenly send testosterone soaring if everything else is functioning normally, but it is enough to say that zinc matters for the endocrine environment that supports sperm production.
What selenium does differently (and why they work as a pair)
If zinc is the construction manager, selenium is the bodyguard that sticks around after the building is done.
Selenium gets incorporated into a family of proteins called selenoproteins. The one most relevant to fertility is glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4). Early in sperm development, GPX4 acts as a regular enzyme, neutralizing hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxides. But as the sperm matures, GPX4 cross-links into a structural protein that forms a rigid capsule around the sperm’s midpiece-the engine compartment that houses the mitochondria. Without enough selenium, that capsule doesn’t form properly. The result is sperm with broken necks, bent midpieces, or tails that flail without forward propulsion.
A 2009 randomized trial published in the Journal of Urology gave men with idiopathic infertility a daily combination of selenium and an antioxidant for 26 weeks. At the end, the treatment group had a significant improvement in sperm concentration, motility, and morphology compared to placebo. A 2011 meta-analysis in the International Journal of General Medicine confirmed that selenium levels in seminal plasma correlate positively with sperm quality, and that correcting low levels tends to move the needle on morphology in particular.
Selenium also supports thyroid hormone activation, and thyroid function plays a background role in regulating the whole reproductive axis. It’s not the first thing most men think about, but a sluggish thyroid can quietly drag down sperm production.
The reason zinc and selenium keep getting mentioned together is that sperm are under constant oxidative siege. Zinc helps prevent DNA snaps during the packaging phase, and selenium keeps the structural engine intact and helps mop up the oxidative waste. Run low on either one, and the cell’s quality control system starts to break down at a different point.

The selenium content of plant foods depends heavily on soil quality. Soils in parts of the US Midwest and the UK tend to be lower in selenium than the soils in the Dakotas or Nebraska, which is why a single Brazil nut can be a reliable insurance policy regardless of where your vegetables were grown.
How to actually eat this way without overhauling your life
The goal isn’t perfection, just a few reliable daily anchors.
Breakfast: Scramble two or three eggs in butter. Eat them with a slice of sourdough toast (the fermentation lowers the phytate load, improving zinc absorption from the grains and seeds you eat alongside). Put one or two Brazil nuts on the side and you’ve already knocked out your selenium for the day.
Lunch: A bowl with ground beef or pulled chicken, black beans, and a spoonful of pumpkin seeds covers zinc from complementary sources. The animal protein also contains amino acids like cysteine that enhance zinc uptake.
Dinner: If oysters are accessible where you live, even one oyster-heavy meal per week shifts your average zinc intake. A tin of smoked oysters on whole-grain crackers works as a low-effort appetizer. Otherwise, a pork chop with roasted broccoli and quinoa does the job.
Snacks: A handful of roasted cashews and sunflower seeds keeps both minerals topped up between meals. Greek yogurt with a drizzle of honey and some hemp seeds adds more zinc.
A practical reality: zinc absorption from plant sources is lower because phytates in whole grains, legumes, and seeds bind to zinc in the gut. You don’t need to avoid those foods. Just pair them with animal protein when you can, or use traditional preparation methods like soaking, sprouting, or sourdough fermentation that break down some of the phytate. A word on supplements and what to watch for
Most men who eat a mixed diet with some animal foods hit their zinc and selenium marks without thinking about it. But restrictive eating patterns can leave gaps. Vegans and vegetarians sometimes fall short on zinc because plant sources are less bioavailable, and they may miss selenium entirely unless they’re deliberate about Brazil nuts or sunflower seeds. Older men may also absorb zinc less efficiently.
If you suspect your intake is low, a doctor can run a simple blood test for serum zinc and plasma selenium. That’s the place to start, not a guess off the internet. Zinc lozenges and selenium capsules are easy to find, but both minerals have a ceiling. More than about 40 mg of zinc per day over time can mess with copper absorption and weaken immune function. Selenium toxicity becomes a real risk above 400 micrograms daily, and a few too many Brazil nuts every day can get you there.
