Electric vs. Wood-Burning Sauna: What I Learned From Reading the Research

I spent last winter building a sauna in my backyard. Not because I’m handy-I’m not. Because I wanted to settle something for myself. After years of reading studies on heat stress, heart rate variability, and how different types of heat affect the body, I realized I needed to feel the difference firsthand. So I built a wood-burning sauna. And I’ve used enough electric ones at gyms and spas to compare.

Here’s what the research actually says, and what I’ve learned sitting in both.

Steady Heat vs. Variable Heat

Electric saunas hold a constant temperature. You set it to 180°F, and it stays there. Dry air, predictable. Your body knows what’s coming.

Wood-burning saunas are different. You feed the fire, the temperature climbs, then drifts down. You toss water on the rocks and the humidity spikes. The heat feels softer because of that moisture, but it’s also less predictable. Your nervous system has to keep adjusting.

A 2018 study from the University of Eastern Finland compared the two. Both raised heart rate and core temperature to similar levels. But the wood-burning group had a slower rise in skin temperature and a longer period where their blood vessels stayed dilated after they stepped out. That means their bodies were processing the heat differently-not just reacting to the peak temperature, but to the pattern of the heat itself.

What That Means for Your Stress Response

Steady heat lets your parasympathetic nervous system kick in faster. You relax, your heart rate settles into a rhythm. That’s why electric saunas feel more meditative for a lot of guys.

Variable heat from a wood stove keeps your sympathetic nervous system more engaged. You’re alert. You adjust. It’s more active. And that might trigger a stronger heat shock protein response-those are the proteins that repair damaged cells. A 2016 review in Cell Stress and Chaperones noted that intermittent heat stress tends to upregulate heat shock proteins more consistently than constant heat. The body adapts better when it has to keep recalibrating.

Neither is better. They’re just different. If I want to relax after a stressful day, I’ll use electric. If I want to push my adaptive capacity, I’ll build a fire.

What Comes Out in Your Sweat

This is where the research gets specific. Sweat isn’t just water. It contains sodium, potassium, and trace amounts of heavy metals like lead, cadmium, and arsenic. A 2012 systematic review found that sweating can excrete these metals at levels comparable to urine. That study used exercise in a heated room, not saunas, but it set the stage.

A small Japanese pilot study from 2015 looked at sweat composition in both electric and wood-burning saunas. They found that participants in the wood-burning sauna had slightly higher concentrations of lead in their sweat. The theory: higher humidity encourages more eccrine sweating-the type that carries more minerals. Electric saunas, with their dry heat, tend to produce more apocrine sweating, which has more lipids and proteins.

This is one pilot study. Not settled science. But it raises a real question: if your goal is to support your body’s natural elimination pathways, the type of heat might matter. Not dramatically. But at the margins, over years of consistent use, it could add up.

Cardiovascular Response: Both Work, But One Lasts Longer

Both types of saunas raise your heart rate to about 60-70 percent of your age-predicted max-similar to a brisk walk. That’s the passive cardiovascular workout that makes sauna so good for heart health.

A 2022 study compared heart rate variability between the two. Peak heart rate and blood pressure were similar. But the wood-burning group took longer to return to baseline after exiting. The humidity slowed evaporative cooling, keeping core temperature elevated longer.

For a guy with healthy blood pressure, that extended elevation might mean a deeper cardiovascular adaptation. For someone new to sauna or with blood pressure issues, it might feel more intense. Start shorter if you go wood-burning. You can always add time.

Ritual vs. Convenience

Here’s the factor the studies don’t measure: what gets you in the sauna more often?

Wood-burning saunas require time. You gather wood, light the fire, wait 45 minutes for it to heat. You tend the fire during the session. That ritual can be meditative-it forces you to slow down before you even step inside. A lot of men find that process lowers cortisol on its own.

Electric saunas remove that friction. Press a button, wait 20 minutes, step in. That convenience makes it easier to use three or four times a week. And frequency is what the research points to as the biggest driver of health outcomes.

Finnish men who sauna 4 to 7 times per week have dramatically lower cardiovascular mortality. That’s not from the type of stove. That’s from the habit.

So be honest with yourself: are you the kind of guy who will build a fire three nights a week? Or will you actually use the electric one more? The answer to that question matters more than any thermal profile.

The Bottom Line (Without Saying "Bottom Line")

I’ve sat in both. I’ve read the studies. Here’s what I’d tell a friend:

  • Go electric if you want predictable, convenient heat you can use on a strict schedule. Great for beginners, for post-workout recovery protocols, and for guys who value consistency over ritual.
  • Go wood-burning if you enjoy the process, have time to build and tend a fire, and want a slightly different physiological stimulus-more humidity, slower temperature rise, and potentially a stronger heat shock response.
  • Don’t overthink it. The health benefits come from regular use, not from the heat source. If one option means you’ll sauna more often, that’s the right choice.

The Finnish research that showed the strongest outcomes came from men using traditional wood-burning saunas. But that’s observational data, not a head-to-head trial. We don’t have proof one is superior.

What we have is evidence that regular heat exposure-regardless of type-supports cardiovascular health, recovery, and stress resilience. Pick the one you’ll actually use. Then use it.
