The materials you choose for the interior directly affect the air quality inside that hot box. Your lungs don’t get a break just because the wood looks nice.

Most commercial sealants, stains, and varnishes contain solvents, biocides, UV stabilizers, and plasticizers. At room temperature, these compounds release slowly. At 180°F, they release fast.
Researchers at the University of Eastern Finland published a study in Building and Environment (2020) that measured volatile organic compounds in thirty home saunas. The saunas with untreated interior surfaces-cedar, spruce, or aspen-had VOC levels comparable to outdoor air. The saunas with treated surfaces had VOC spikes up to 40 times higher during the first thirty minutes of heating. The compounds detected included toluene, xylene, and formaldehyde.
Formaldehyde is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Toluene affects the central nervous system at high levels. A single session with elevated VOCs won’t cause acute poisoning. But sauna users typically go multiple times per week for years. That’s cumulative exposure at the exact temperature where your body’s detox pathways are supposed to be working.
What Specifically Leaches Into the Air
Let me break down what’s actually in common weatherproofing products and what happens when you heat them.
- Alkyd and polyurethane varnishes contain solvents like mineral spirits and white spirit. At high heat, those solvents vaporize quickly. The chemical smell isn’t just “new car smell.” It’s a mix of hydrocarbons your liver has to process. A 2018 study in Indoor Air found that polyurethane floor coatings released peak VOC concentrations at 113°F. Saunas routinely reach 175-212°F. The release rate is exponential with temperature.
- Acrylic stains are water-based, which is better, but they often contain coalescing solvents like butyl glycol or Texanol that help the stain form a film. At sauna temperatures, those solvents volatilize. They also contain biocides to prevent mildew growth. Biocides are designed to kill living things-your respiratory epithelium is living tissue.
- Oil-based stains (linseed, tung, or Danish oil) are closer to natural, but many commercial versions add metal driers-cobalt, manganese, zirconium-to speed curing. Cobalt compounds are classified as possible human carcinogens by the IARC. A 2021 study in Environmental Science & Technology showed that cobalt-based driers in wood finishes can be released into the air during heating.
- Silicone-based water sealers are less volatile, but they can trap moisture in the wood, leading to microbial growth underneath the sealant. Mold in a hot, humid environment is a respiratory concern.
The Fertility Connection No One Talks About
Here’s where this gets specific to men. Ten years ago, researchers at the University of British Columbia found that scrotal temperature increases of as little as 1°C can reduce sperm production by 14% per degree. Sauna use temporarily raises core and scrotal temperature. That’s why fertility guidelines sometimes advise against very hot saunas or very long sessions.
But the chemical exposure may matter as much as the heat. Phthalates, used as plasticizers in many coatings, are known endocrine disruptors. A 2023 study in Environmental Health Perspectives measured phthalate metabolites in men who used saunas weekly. Those with treated interior surfaces had significantly higher levels of monoethyl phthalate in urine compared to men with untreated saunas. Phthalates interfere with Leydig cell function, which produces testosterone. They also affect sperm DNA integrity. So here’s the chain: you build an outdoor sauna for the health benefits-improved circulation, reduced inflammation, heat shock protein activation-but if you use the wrong weatherproofing, you’re simultaneously exposing yourself to compounds that work against your endocrine system.
Professor Shanna Swan, in her book Count Down (2021), documented the global decline in sperm counts. She points to environmental chemicals as a primary driver. Sweating is one way the body excretes some of these chemicals-heavy metals, BPA, phthalates. But breathing them in during a sauna session puts them directly into your bloodstream via the alveolar surface area of your lungs, which is roughly the size of a tennis court. That’s a direct route that bypasses the liver’s first-pass metabolism.
What Finnish Sauna Builders Actually Do
I asked a friend who built his own sauna on an island outside Helsinki. He laughed when I told him about the deck stain. “We use bare wood,” he said. “Cedar is naturally rot-resistant. You don’t need to seal it.”
He’s right. Western red cedar and northern white cedar contain natural thujaplicins, which are fungicidal. The wood can handle rain and snow if it’s properly ventilated and has a slight roof overhang. The Finns have been doing this for centuries. Their smoke saunas are often unfinished inside. The heat and airflow keep the wood dry enough to prevent rot.
I also looked at Japanese woodworking traditions. The shou sugi ban technique-charring the surface of cedar with fire-creates a carbon layer that repels water. No chemicals. The charred surface is bacteriostatic and lasts decades. Some sauna builders in the Pacific Northwest use this for exterior siding and leave the interior unfinished.
For interior surfaces, the consensus among experienced sauna builders is clear: leave it bare, or use a very thin coat of raw linseed oil (not boiled linseed oil, which contains metal driers). The oil penetrates the wood and offers moisture resistance without forming a film that traps heat and releases VOCs. It darkens the wood naturally. It needs reapplication every two to three years, but that’s two afternoons of work for a decade of cleaner air.
What the Air Quality Data Actually Says
In 2022, researchers from the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health tested twelve prefabricated sauna cabins. They measured formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and total VOCs at room temperature and after thirty minutes of heating to 176°F. The saunas with commercial coatings on the interior had formaldehyde levels three to five times higher than the WHO’s recommended threshold for a half-hour exposure. The saunas with bare wood had levels below detection limits.
The WHO thresholds are conservative, designed to protect sensitive populations. But the health benefits of sauna are dose-dependent. More sessions, longer sessions, hotter temperatures-all correlate with better outcomes in the Finnish studies. If VOCs limit your tolerance-you get a headache, your eyes burn, you cut sessions short-you’re losing the benefits you built the sauna for.
There’s also a thermal degradation factor. Polyurethane varnishes start breaking down at roughly 300°F. Many electric sauna heaters produce surface temperatures well above that. Over time, the polymer structure degrades and releases decomposition byproducts you don’t want to inhale.
Practical Protocol for the Health-Minded Sauna Builder
I’m not going to tell you what to do with your sauna. But I can share what I did and what the research supports.
- For the interior: Bare cedar or spruce. Cedar is better for rot resistance. If you want a finish, raw linseed oil (food-grade, from a hardware store) applied in one thin coat, wiped off after 15 minutes, and cured for two weeks before heating. No varnish. No water sealers. No “sauna wax” products with paraffin or microcrystalline wax-those can melt and volatilize at high temperature.
- For the exterior: The wood will get wet. That’s fine. The key is airflow behind the siding-a rain screen system-and a roof overhang that keeps direct rain off the walls. For exposed areas like the roof, simple metal or cedar shakes work. No preservatives needed if you use naturally durable wood.
- For the floor: Many people use treated lumber or ceramic tile with epoxy grout. Pressure-treated lumber contains copper and arsenic compounds. Ceramic tile and cementitious grout are fine-just make sure the grout is 100% cement, not epoxy-based. Epoxy can off-gas during the first few hours of heating.
- The smell test: Before you install any material, leave a sample in your oven at 200°F for 30 minutes. Open the oven and smell it. If it smells like anything other than hot wood, don’t put it in your sauna.
The Bigger Picture
Outdoor sauna weatherproofing is a niche topic. But it’s a perfect example of something I’ve noticed across men’s health: the most important decisions are often the ones that seem trivial. We obsess over protein timing and rep schemes, then spend an afternoon coating the interior of a space we’ll visit 200 times a year with chemicals that, under heat, become airborne endocrine disruptors.
The research is still emerging. A lot of the data comes from indoor air quality studies, not sauna-specific trials. But the chemistry is straightforward. Heat accelerates off-gassing. The sauna is a closed environment. You’re breathing deeply because you’re hot. That combination increases internal exposure.
If you already have a sauna with a treated interior, you can strip it. Sanding and refinishing is a weekend project. Or you can heat the sauna to maximum temperature with all vents open for three sessions before using it-this speeds the off-gassing. It won’t eliminate all VOCs, but it helps.
Ultimately, your sauna should be a space that supports your body’s recovery and stress-reduction mechanisms. Not a source of compounds your liver has to process. The Finns have used saunas for thousands of years without deck stain. That tradition holds up under modern material science.
