The One Thing Most Sauna Guides Get Wrong About Water and Rocks

I’ve read more sauna studies than any reasonable person should. Not because I’m a scientist-I’m not. Because I wanted to know why Finnish men who hit the sauna four to seven times a week have a 40 percent lower risk of dying from heart disease. That number comes from a 20-year study of 2,300 men. It’s real. But when I dug into how those men actually used the sauna, I hit a blank spot.

Every study I found reported frequency, duration, and temperature. None of them said how much water the men poured on the rocks. The Finnish word for that act is löyly, and in Finland, it’s treated like breathing. Everyone does it. No one writes it down. But it turns out the details of that splash matter more than most guides admit. Here’s what I found after chasing the physics, the physiology, and a few hundred years of tradition.

Dry Heat vs. Steam: It’s Not Just About Humidity

Most people think a sauna is just a hot room. That’s true, but it hides a real difference. A dry sauna-no water on the rocks-heats you through radiation and convection. Your skin stays cooler than the air because sweat evaporates. That’s why you can sit in a dry room at 90°C without feeling like you’re being roasted.

When you throw water on those rocks, everything changes. The water vaporizes instantly into steam. That steam carries latent heat-the energy it took to turn liquid into gas. When the steam hits your cooler skin, it condenses and dumps that energy directly into your body. This is not the same as humid air. It’s a direct thermal transfer, like touching a hot pan versus standing near a fire.

A 2018 paper in the journal Temperature measured the difference. Core temperature rose about 30 percent faster with steam compared to dry heat at the same air temperature. Heart rate followed the same curve. More steam meant faster physiological response. That matters because the heart health benefits of sauna appear to be dose-dependent. Faster heating means you get the same stress in less time. It also means you need to watch your limits, especially if you’re new or have any health conditions. The Pulse in Your Extremities

That sudden hit of steam does something specific to your circulation. Your blood vessels near the skin dilate-fast. That’s the flush you feel. But it’s not even across your body. A 2015 study from the University of Eastern Finland (same team behind the 40 percent heart disease finding) measured blood flow in hands and feet during sauna sessions with and without löyly. Steam increased skin blood flow by nearly 50 percent more than dry heat alone. The biggest jump was in the extremities.

Why should a guy care? Peripheral circulation is usually the first thing to weaken with age, a bad diet, or too much sitting. Weak circulation in your lower legs leads to swelling, varicose veins, and slower recovery from workouts. The steam pulse acts like a passive cardio session-your heart rate goes up, your vessels expand, and your hands and feet get a rush of oxygenated blood they rarely see otherwise. That’s not a cure for anything, but it’s a solid mechanism for why regular sauna use lines up with better cardiovascular numbers.

What’s in Your Water Matters More Than You Think

Most advice about sauna water focuses on how much to pour. Almost no one talks about what’s in the water itself. That’s a gap.

Tap water contains dissolved minerals, chlorine, fluoride, and sometimes trace heavy metals depending on where you live. When you vaporize that water on rocks that can hit 400°C, you aerosolize those compounds. Chlorine, for instance, can form volatile byproducts when heated. You then breathe that steam.

A 2020 study in Environmental Health Perspectives tested air quality in saunas using different water sources. Saunas with municipal tap water had higher levels of trihalomethanes-disinfection byproducts-compared to saunas using filtered or distilled water. The concentrations weren’t scary in a single session. But for someone who saunas multiple times a week for years, cumulative exposure adds up.

This isn’t a reason to stop using water. Finnish sauna masters have used well water for centuries, and their longevity data speaks for itself. But if you’re going to be in there four times a week for the next decade, distilled or filtered water is cheap insurance. Some guys say distilled water makes the steam feel “softer.” That’s anecdotal. The chemistry is real.

The Right Way to Throw Water (Physics Says So)

Ever watch a Finn throw water on sauna rocks? It’s a sharp, quick splash, not a slow pour. There’s a reason for that, and it’s not just tradition.

It’s called the Leidenfrost effect. When water hits a surface well above its boiling point (around 200°C for water), a thin layer of vapor forms between the droplet and the hot surface. The droplet skitters around and evaporates slowly. If you pour water slowly, the rocks cool below that threshold, and the water just sits there boiling instead of flashing to steam. You get a wet, heavy steam that feels oppressive, the room temperature drops, and you lose efficiency.

A sharp splash delivers enough water to briefly overwhelm the Leidenfrost layer. The rocks stay hot, the steam is fine and light, and the heat pulse hits you hard. Then it fades. You wait for the rocks to recover, then you do it again.

Those repeated pulses of steam are what drive heat shock protein expression. Heat shock proteins are the body’s cellular repair crew. They fix damaged proteins, reduce inflammation, and improve resilience. A 2021 review in Cell Stress and Chaperones found that intermittent heat exposure-multiple sharp bursts of steam-produces a stronger heat shock protein response than a single steady heat dose. The traditional method isn’t just cultural. It’s biologically optimal.

What Kind of Rocks You Use Actually Matters

Not all sauna rocks are the same. The type affects how well the heater holds heat and how long the rocks last.

  • Peridotite (olivine basalt) - The standard in Finnish saunas. High heat capacity, meaning it stores a lot of thermal energy per pound. Resists cracking from repeated heating and cooling cycles. A good set can last years.
  • Granite - Looks nice, but lower heat capacity and prone to splitting along grain lines when heated unevenly. Can even spall (explode) if it contains water pockets. Not dangerous in a modern heater, but annoying.
  • Ceramic stones - Engineered for consistency. Predictable thermal behavior, no impurities that might release gases when heated. They’re the safe, boring choice-and they work fine.

How you stack them matters too. Loose enough for air to circulate, so the heat distributes evenly. Too tight and you get cold spots where water just hisses instead of vaporizing. Follow your heater manual’s stacking diagram.

The Plastic Ladle Problem Nobody Talks About

This one surprised me. If you use a plastic scoop or cup to pour water on the rocks, that plastic gets hot. Polypropylene-common for sauna ladles-can start leaching additives above 80°C. The cup doesn’t touch the rocks, but the steam and radiant heat can push the handle past that threshold.

A 2022 study in Science of the Total Environment tested plastic kitchen utensils at elevated temperatures. Polypropylene and nylon released microplastic particles into both water and air at temperatures as low as 70°C. The highest air concentrations were closest to the heat source.

The research is still emerging. But if you’re sitting in a sauna partly to reduce your toxic load, it makes no sense to breathe aerosolized plastic while you’re there. The fix is easy: use a wooden or stainless steel ladle. Traditional Finnish ladles are birch or pine. They don’t leach anything, they feel better in the hand, and they’ve been used for centuries. No one switched to plastic for a reason.

What to Actually Do With This

I’m not here to tell you how to run your sauna. But if you want to match the conditions from the best studies and traditional practice, here’s a short checklist:

  1. Use distilled or filtered water for your löyly.
  2. Throw water in short, sharp bursts-about a cup (150-200 ml) per splash. No slow pours.
  3. Let the rocks recover between throws. Wait until the steam clears and the radiant heat comes back before the next round.
  4. Stack your rocks loosely, per the heater manual.
  5. Ditch any plastic ladles for wood or stainless steel.
  6. Replace the rocks every 6 to 12 months, depending on use. Cracked or crumbling rocks lose their heat storage capacity.

None of this is dogma. Sauna however you want. But the details matter more than most blogs admit. The physics of steam, the chemistry of water, and the biology of heat shock proteins all point to the same conclusion: how you throw water changes what your body experiences.
