I went down a rabbit hole a few months ago. When I decided to put a sauna in my backyard, I figured the hard part would be choosing between a barrel and a cabin, or maybe figuring out the electrical load. The forums all circled the same things: cedar versus hemlock, 6kW versus 8kW, vapor barriers and drainage gravel. None of that turned out to be the thing that stuck with me.
What stuck with me was something I stumbled across in old dermatology journals while trying to understand whether what I sat on for 20 minutes a day actually mattered. It does. More than I expected. And it changed every installation decision I made from that point forward.
The body part nobody mentions when planning a sauna
Men already know the heat-and-fertility talk. Keep your sessions reasonable, cool down after, don't cook the factory. That's well-covered physiology and I'm not going to repeat it. But while reading the fertility literature, I found a piece of research from 1971 that wasn't about fertility at all and it reframed the whole installation question for me.
A team at UCSF led by Howard Maibach measured how fast test compounds get absorbed through skin at different body sites. They tested the forearm, the scalp, the forehead, the armpit, and the scrotum. The results weren't close. Scrotal skin absorbed far more of everything they tested than any other site. The stratum corneum is thinner there. There are more hair follicles. Blood supply is richer. Now step into a sauna. If you're wearing minimal clothing, that highly permeable skin is sitting directly on your bench or towel for the entire session. This isn't about temperature anymore. It's about whatever is in contact with that skin being in the perfect position to get absorbed.
Heat and sweat push the same direction
Two separate mechanisms make this more than a footnote. The first is temperature alone. A 2020 paper in Toxicology in Vitro showed that raising skin temperature from 25°C to 39°C, which is basically the sauna experience, increased absorption of their test compounds by over 200 percent. The second is moisture. Sweat saturates the skin surface, and hydrated skin is measurably more permeable. A 1988 study in the British Journal of Dermatology documented that occlusion and moisture together raise dermal penetration.
Stack these up. Extraordinarily permeable body site. Skin temperature climbing well into the zone that cranks absorption. Sweat-soaked skin pressed against a surface for 15 or 20 minutes at a time. All three are pushing in the same direction. This isn't alarmism. It's physiology. And it means your bench material, and especially whatever goes between you and the bench, isn't a comfort decision. It's an exposure decision.
The polyester towel problem
Wood benches in traditional saunas are typically unfinished cedar or spruce, which are mostly inert. That's not the variable I'd lose sleep over. The variable is the towel. Or the synthetic seat pad. Or the microfiber camp towel someone grabs because it dries fast.
Polyester doesn't sit there innocently. It's manufactured with an antimony catalyst, and trace antimony stays in the finished fiber. There's a standard test for this, ISO 105-E04, that uses artificial sweat to measure what leaches out of fabrics during prolonged skin contact. Researchers have used it on polyester. The result: sweat pulls antimony out of the fabric, and higher-pH sweat, the kind you make during heat exposure, pulls out more. This was confirmed in studies from 2016 and again in 2021.
Now imagine that towel under you, hot and saturated, for hundreds of sessions. I'm not saying a single sauna session with a poly-blend towel is dangerous. I'm saying that repeated, prolonged contact between that fabric and the most permeable skin on your body, under conditions that chemically accelerate migration, adds a variable you didn't ask for.
There's a separate issue most people miss. A 2020 study on textile shedding found that polyester releases microfibers into the air just from wearing it, at levels comparable to what washing machines put down the drain. Inside a hot, sealed sauna, those airborne particles concentrate. You're breathing them. Polyester softens around 70°C, so while your sauna isn't melting it, the thermal stress accelerates fiber fragmentation. This isn't a hypothetical. It's a particulate exposure happening right in front of your face, session after session.
Outdoor saunas seal in more than heat
An indoor sauna shares air with the house. Your outdoor unit doesn't. It's a capsule. The wood, the vapor barrier, the adhesives around the door seals, the flooring underneath, all of it cycles through heating and cooling inside that small, enclosed space. Chemicals that off-gas at room temperature off-gas faster at 75°C.
Pressure-treated lumber under the floor is a common example. It's designed for ground contact outdoors, not for being baked in an enclosed box while you're breathing the air a foot above it. Untreated cedar or a simple gravel base avoids that without costing more. The adhesive in manufactured trim, the composite in window gaskets, the sealant on the door, those all become part of the air you spend 20 minutes breathing deeply.
Installation is the one window where you control this. After the sauna is built and you're using it weekly, the materials are locked in. The question to ask before assembly is: would I voluntarily heat this material to 75°C and sit next to it while I inhale deeply? If the answer is no, it doesn't belong inside the walls.
A simple protocol that costs nothing
None of this is medical advice. It's just what I landed on after reading the research and standing in my half-built sauna with a stack of decisions to make.
- Cotton only on the bench. 100% cotton terry towels, washed before first use, washed regularly. Two cotton towels if you need cushion. No microfiber, no synthetic blends, no camp towels, no seat pads with mystery foam.
- Cotton shorts or nothing at all. Synthetic swim trunks and compression shorts are great for the gym. They're terrible for sitting on a hot wooden bench while your skin is doing its best impression of a sponge.
- No plastic inside. That water bottle heating up next to you is leaching into the water you're about to drink. Stainless steel. Or just leave the bottle outside and hydrate before and after.
- Shower immediately after. Sweating is one of the body's genuine excretion pathways. Research from 2012 catalogued what shows up in sweat: lead, cadmium, arsenic, BPA, phthalates. Getting those out is good. Leaving them to dry on your skin so they reabsorb isn't. Rinse off. It takes 90 seconds.
The Finnish data still stands
The cardiovascular benefits aren't up for debate. The Kuopio study tracked 2,300 Finnish men for over two decades. Men who used a sauna four to seven times a week had a 40% lower risk of fatal cardiovascular events compared to once-a-week users. The relationship was dose-dependent. The mechanisms, improved endothelial function, reduced arterial stiffness, lower systemic inflammation, have been replicated. Sauna works.
My installation argument isn't that you should skip the sauna. It's that the choices you make during installation either support the outcome you're chasing or quietly work against it. You didn't build this thing to get chronic low-level antimony exposure. You didn't build it to inhale aerosolized polyester particles. You didn't build it to sit on pressure-treated wood chemistry in a sealed hot box for a decade.
Finnish saunas don't have synthetic towels or treated lumber or plastic water bottles. They have wood, water, and heat. The closer your installation gets to that simplicity, the closer you get to the results the research actually measured.
