The Real Exercise Variable Behind Sperm Count: Heat, Not Movement Choice
Fifteen minutes in a sauna twice a week for three months was enough to lower sperm concentration and morphology in healthy men. The numbers recovered once the heat stopped (Garolla et al., Human Reproduction, 2013). That one result tells you more about exercise and sperm count than any list of fertility workouts ever will.Search "best exercises to boost sperm count" and you get yoga poses, leg raises, supplement stacks. None of that touches the variable underneath the whole conversation: temperature. Sperm production needs the testicles about 2 to 4 degrees... Read more...
Portable Infrared Sauna Pros and Cons: Finnish Data Doesn't Transfer to a 130-Degree Tent
Men who used a traditional Finnish sauna four to seven times a week had a 40 percent lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease over roughly two decades compared to men who used one once a week. That number comes from a 20-year study of 2,300 Finnish men published in JAMA Internal Medicine in 2015 (Laukkanen et al.). The saunas in that study ran at 80 to 100 degrees Celsius. A portable infrared sauna runs at roughly 43 to 60 degrees Celsius. Same word, different machine, different heat load. That... Read more...
Sauna and Cold Plunge Setup: Your Equipment Matters Less Than Your Schedule
Finnish men who used a sauna 4 to 7 times per week had a 40 percent lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease over roughly 21 years compared with men who used one once a week. The study followed 2,315 middle-aged men in the Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study and was published in JAMA Internal Medicine in 2015 (Laukkanen et al.). The researchers adjusted for age, smoking, alcohol, blood pressure, cholesterol, and physical activity. More weekly sessions correlated with lower all-cause mortality, lower cardiovascular death, and lower sudden... Read more...
Sauna for Anxiety and Stress Relief: The Stress-Inoculation Mechanism
Finnish men who sauna four to seven times per week had a 77 percent lower risk of being diagnosed with a psychotic disorder over the following two and a half decades compared to men who saunaed once a week. That number comes from the Kuopio Ischemic Heart Disease study, which followed 2,138 men since the 1980s (Kunutsor et al., Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics, 2018). The same cohort, analyzed for dementia, showed a 66 percent lower risk in frequent sauna users (Laukkanen et al., Age and Ageing, 2017). Most sauna-for-anxiety content reads... Read more...
Varicocele Surgery and Fertility: What 48 Randomized Trials Actually Show
A 2021 Cochrane review pooled 48 randomized trials and concluded that treating a clinical varicocele probably increases pregnancy and live birth rates for subfertile men. The authors rated the evidence moderate certainty, which means they trusted the direction of the effect while leaving room for the exact size to shift. Yet plenty of men sit through an entire fertility consultation today and never hear the word varicocele once. The gap between those two facts is the story worth understanding. The condition is common. About 15% of adult men have a varicocele.... Read more...
Sauna After Workout: The Recovery Claim Falls Flat, but Endurance Adapts
Most men step into a sauna after lifting because they believe it speeds recovery. I have read the studies, and that belief starts to wobble under pressure. The best controlled study on post-workout sauna found a 32 percent improvement in endurance and a measurable expansion in blood volume after three weeks. Muscle recovery barely moved. In 2007, researchers in New Zealand put six competitive male runners through a protocol: 30 minutes in a sauna after each run, three days a week, for three weeks straight. Their time to exhaustion on a... Read more...
Sperm Donation Law Was Built for Anonymity. The DNA Era Broke It.
William Marotta answered a Craigslist ad in 2009 and donated sperm to a Kansas couple. He signed a written agreement waiving his parental rights. A judge later ruled that the state’s artificial insemination statute did not protect him because no doctor was involved. That one procedural detail turned a private arrangement into a legal parent-child relationship, and the state pursued him for child support. Most men assume the law separates genetic fatherhood from legal fatherhood once they donate. It does, but only when the donation goes through a licensed physician and... Read more...
Build Your Sauna for Four Sessions a Week, Not for Looks
Jari Laukkanen's research team at the University of Eastern Finland followed 2,315 middle-aged men for a median of 20.7 years. The men who used a sauna 4 to 7 times per week were 40% less likely to die from cardiovascular disease than men who used one once a week. The same comparison showed a 40% lower risk of death from any cause. More weekly sessions tracked with lower risk across the board. That study, published in JAMA Internal Medicine in 2015, did not care about the brand of heater, the... Read more...
Men's Underwear Spent 150 Years Chasing Support. Sperm Needed Cooler Air.
Men who reported wearing boxers had 25 percent higher sperm concentration than men who wore tighter underwear in a 2018 study of 656 men at a fertility center. The research team adjusted for age, body mass index, smoking, and other confounders, and the gap held. Total count was 17 percent higher in the boxer group too. That points to heat, not brand. Men's underwear spent 150 years chasing support, shape, and social acceptability while ignoring a biological fact documented for over a century. Sperm production needs the testicles a few degrees... The Home Sauna Borrows Its Science From Men Who Never Sweated Alone
Men who took 4 to 7 sauna baths per week had a 40% lower risk of dying from any cause over two decades compared with men who took one. That number comes from a Finnish study that followed 2,315 men for a median of 20.7 years, and the dose-response was clean. More weekly sessions meant lower rates of sudden cardiac death, fatal coronary heart disease, and fatal cardiovascular disease (Laukkanen et al., JAMA Internal Medicine, 2015). The brochures that sell home saunas love that figure. They leave out the setting.... Read more...
