Can working in high-temperature environments reduce male fertility?

Yes. Sustained high heat can lower sperm production. The effect is real, measurable in healthy men, and usually reversible once the heat stops. Working in a high-temperature environment does not automatically make a man infertile, but it can suppress the process that makes sperm. The reason comes down to testicular temperature.

Why the testicles run cooler than the rest of the body

Sperm production works best when the scrotum stays a few degrees below core body temperature. The usual range is about two to four degrees Celsius cooler than the rest of the body. The scrotum has several built-in cooling systems. Muscles raise or lower the testicles depending on heat. Sweat glands cool the skin. A network of veins pulls heat away from the testicles. A 2015 review in Reproductive BioMedicine Online describes these systems in detail (Durairajanayagam et al., 2015). The limitation is that these systems can be overwhelmed. Stand next to a furnace, work a grill, or sit in a hot cab for a full shift, and the outside heat can outpace the body's ability to dump it.

What the research shows about heat and sperm

Most of the direct human data come from sauna and wet-heat studies, not from workplace studies. A 2013 study in Human Reproduction enrolled ten healthy men who did two 15-minute sauna sessions per week for three months. Sperm count and motility dropped measurably. The same researchers found that sperm parameters recovered within about six months after the men stopped the heat exposure (Garolla et al., Human Reproduction, 2013). The sample was small, but it tested the question directly. Earlier work found a similar pattern. Shefi et al. reported in Fertility and Sterility (2007) that men who stopped regular hot baths and saunas had measurable improvements in semen parameters over the following months.

The mechanism transfers to hot jobs because the source of heat does not matter to the testicles. Whether the heat comes from a sauna, a foundry, a grill, or a laptop, the scrotum responds the same way, because the cells that make sperm do not care where the extra degrees came from. A 2005 study in Human Reproduction measured scrotal temperature while men used a laptop on their thighs. Temperature rose by roughly 2.6 degrees Celsius within an hour (Sheynkin et al., Human Reproduction, 2005). A separate 2005 study found that sitting for long periods and wearing tighter underwear both raised scrotal temperature (Jung et al., Human Reproduction, 2005). Those are local heat sources, but the principle applies to whole-body heat.

What counts as a high-temperature job

High-temperature work can come in several forms. Radiant heat from furnaces, welding arcs, and ovens. Ambient heat in a boiler room, a summer roof, or a long-haul truck cab. Local heat from sitting on heated equipment or wearing thick, non-breathable clothing. None of these automatically make a man infertile. Plenty of men in hot jobs conceive without any issue. The concern is accumulated heat exposure over weeks and months. Ten minutes of heat here and there is different from eight hours a day, five days a week. The sauna study used only 15 minutes twice a week, and that was enough to change sperm parameters in healthy men.

There is no single workplace temperature that guarantees a problem. Sperm production does not have a thermostat with a cutoff reading. The operating question is how much total heat the testicles sit in across a week, including off-duty saunas, hot baths, and a laptop on the lap.

Timing and reversibility

Sperm production is a continuous process. A full cycle takes roughly two to three months from start to finish. That timing matters for two reasons. Heat exposure this month can show up in a semen analysis roughly two to three months later. And when the heat stops, the body does not fix the sample overnight. New sperm need time to develop. In the Garolla study, recovery took up to six months. In the Shefi study, improvements appeared over several months. The reversibility data are the strongest reason not to panic, but they also mean patience is part of the equation.

What about testosterone

The research there is not as direct. Heat clearly stresses the temperature-sensitive cells inside the testicles. A single hot shift does not crash testosterone. The long-term hormonal effect of regular occupational heat exposure has not been settled by large trials. The fertility conversation sits mostly on the sperm side, where the human data are clearest.

What men in hot jobs can do

  • Reduce additional heat outside work. If you already spend eight hours in a hot environment, adding frequent saunas or hot baths on top of it increases the total heat load. That does not mean you have to avoid them forever. It means the total matters.
  • Look at what you wear. A 2018 study of 656 men at a fertility center found that men who reported wearing boxer-style underwear had higher sperm concentration and total count than men who wore tighter styles (Minguez-Alarcon et al., Human Reproduction, 2018). That study cannot prove cause, but it fits the temperature data. Looser, breathable underwear gives the scrotum more room to dump heat. A 2026 review in Translational Andrology and Urology ties garment fit, scrotal temperature, and fertility outcomes together (Zleczewski et al., 2026).
  • Take cooling breaks when possible. Standing up and moving into cooler air lowers scrotal temperature. Short breaks will not reverse a full shift of heat, but they reduce the accumulated load.
  • Get a baseline if fertility is a current concern. A semen analysis is a straightforward test. A doctor can discuss your specific heat exposure, overall health, and what the results mean. The two-to-three-month cycle also means changes you make now will not show up in semen for a few months.

Heat is one variable among many. Age, genetics, body weight, smoking, and baseline sperm health also matter. The research does not say every man in a hot job will have fertility problems. It says sustained heat lowers sperm production in healthy men, and removing the heat allows recovery. If your job runs hot, the useful move is to lower the heat load where you can and remember that sperm production responds to what happened over the past few months, not what happened this morning.
