A 2023 analysis of global sperm count data found that average sperm concentration fell from 101 million per milliliter in 1973 to 49 million per milliliter in 2018. That is a 51 percent drop over 45 years, and the rate of decline has accelerated since 2000 (Levine et al., Human Reproduction Update, 2023). Air pollution and heavy metals are two of the environmental exposures researchers keep returning to when they try to explain why. Both enter the body through ordinary daily routes. Both affect the cells that make sperm. Understanding how gives you a clearer picture of what to avoid and what not to worry about.
Air pollution and sperm quality
Ambient air pollution is a mix of fine particles, gases like nitrogen dioxide and ozone, and chemicals that attach to those particles, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and metals. The fine particles matter most for reproductive health because they are small enough to move from the lungs into the bloodstream. A PM2.5 particle is about 2.5 micrometers across, roughly 30 times smaller than a human hair. Once in circulation, these particles can reach the testes.
PAHs, which form when fuel burns incompletely, are known to bind to DNA and cause mutations in dividing cells. Sperm precursor cells divide constantly, which makes them vulnerable to that kind of damage. Diesel exhaust, wildfire smoke, and traffic-related air pollution all carry PAHs and fine particles together.
Observational studies in polluted cities have reported associations between higher PM2.5 exposure and lower sperm concentration, reduced motility, and higher DNA fragmentation. The word association matters here. These studies compare groups of men with different exposure levels, but they cannot fully control for diet, stress, smoking, or other variables. The pattern is consistent across several countries, which strengthens the case, but the evidence for air pollution remains less direct than the evidence for high-level heavy metal exposure.
Heavy metals and sperm quality
Lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic are the heavy metals most studied in male reproductive health. Occupational exposure provides the clearest evidence. Men who worked in battery plants, smelters, welding shops, or older construction sites where lead paint and lead pipes were common have been tracked for decades. The findings repeat across studies. Lead exposure is associated with lower sperm count, reduced motility, and abnormal morphology. Cadmium accumulates in the testes and has a long half-life in the body, and it damages the seminiferous tubules where sperm are produced. Mercury, especially methylmercury from large predatory fish, reduces sperm motility. Arsenic, found in contaminated groundwater and some industrial emissions, causes oxidative damage and DNA breaks in sperm.
These are not fringe concerns. Occupational medicine treats lead, cadmium, and mercury as known reproductive toxicants. Dose matters. A man exposed to high levels daily through work has a different risk profile than a man with low background exposure through food and air. But low to moderate exposure has also shown associations with altered sperm parameters in some population studies. Tobacco smoke is a common source of cadmium, and it is one exposure you can change directly.
How the damage happens
Sperm are unusual cells. They carry half your DNA and divide rapidly, but they have limited DNA repair machinery compared with other cells. When air pollution particles or heavy metals reach the testes, they can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS). Some ROS is normal, but excess ROS overwhelms the cell's antioxidant defenses. That state, called oxidative stress, damages the sperm membrane and fragments the DNA inside. DNA fragmentation reduces the chance that a sperm will fertilize an egg normally and may increase the risk of early miscarriage.
Heavy metals also interfere with hormone signaling. Lead and cadmium can disrupt the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, the communication loop between the brain and the testes that controls testosterone and sperm production. Some metals act as endocrine disruptors, mimicking or blocking the body's own hormones. A 2021 review in Frontiers in Endocrinology summarized the evidence on endocrine-disrupting chemicals and male reproductive health, and heavy metals were among the compounds with the most consistent human data (Rodprasert, Toppari, Virtanen, 2021). Lead also displaces zinc in enzymes that copy DNA, which adds another layer of interference.
The wider environmental picture
The sperm count decline documented by Levine and colleagues did not happen in a vacuum. Air pollution and heavy metals are part of a larger load of environmental exposures. Separate research has detected microplastics in human testicular tissue and semen (Hu et al., Toxicological Sciences, 2024; Zhao et al., Science of the Total Environment, 2023). The presence is established. The link to lower fertility is still association, not proven cause. The same caution applies to air pollution. The human data are strong enough to take seriously, but no study can tell you exactly how much of a decline came from one specific pollutant.
Still, the direction of the evidence points one way. Reduce your exposure to airborne particles and known heavy metals, and you reduce the load on the systems that make sperm. That is a reasonable inference, not a medical claim.
Practical ways to lower your exposure
Start with the air you breathe. Check the air quality index (AQI) on your phone before outdoor training. On days when PM2.5 is high, move the workout indoors or train in the morning before traffic builds. A HEPA air purifier in the bedroom can cut indoor particle levels, especially if you live near a major road or in a wildfire-prone area. Avoid idling your car in the garage, and use the kitchen exhaust fan when you cook with gas.
Then look at heavy metal sources.
- If your home was built before 1978, lead paint may be under newer layers. Test the house before sanding or scraping.
- If your water comes through old plumbing, run the tap cold for a minute before drinking or cooking, and use a filter rated for lead removal if testing shows lead.
- Smoking is the easiest cadmium exposure to eliminate, and secondhand smoke counts.
- For fish, smaller species like sardines, salmon, and trout have less mercury than shark, swordfish, king mackerel, or bigeye tuna.
Diet supports the body's own defenses. Foods rich in zinc, such as oysters, pumpkin seeds, and beef, and foods high in antioxidants, such as berries, leafy greens, and coffee, give the testes the raw materials they use to manage oxidative stress. This is not a treatment. It is basic nutrition that supports normal function.
If you have a known occupational exposure or live near an industrial site, talk to a doctor about whether blood or urine testing for heavy metals makes sense for you. A reproductive specialist can also run a semen analysis if you and a partner are trying to conceive. Individual situations vary, and this kind of testing is a conversation to have with a professional, not something to self-diagnose.
You do not need to live in a bubble. Air pollution and heavy metals are easier to reduce than most men assume, and the same habits that protect your lungs and heart also reduce the load on your reproductive system. You cannot control every particle that enters your lungs, but you control a meaningful fraction of your daily exposures.
